Tennessee's Ordinance saw first combat action in 1862 01 at the Battle of Mill Springs. The unit was cited in the OR, led brigade at the battle of Jonesborough in an assault, ended at the Battle of Nashville. Tom Smith's only brother die carrying the regimental colors on 1862 12 31 at Murfreesboro, made also the ultimate sacrifice, life. The efforts of Lt. Thomas B. Smith became the most proficient company in terms of drill in the regiment. The regiment was formed as the drill master and a company.
Shumate was a junior 3d Lieutenant, adjutant of the 20th Tennessee. The last survivors of former Confederate generals released finally Thomas Benton Smith. Nashville Military Institute attended West Point briefly.
