Neuss is a city, the largest city in Germany in North Rhine-Westphalia, celebrated 2000 years holds therefore the title was founded in 16 BC by the Romans. Neuss grew during the Middle Ages, was documented first in 1138 as a town, became a member of the Hanseatic League, in 1946, regained economic power with expansion of the harbour in the 19th century, owns an all-weather racecourse. A Later civil settlement was founded in the area of today. Two-thirds of the city was destroyed by several wars and fire, declined rapidly from Neuss from the mid-17th century onwards.
The late 18th century belonged to the Electorate of Cologne.
