Nankai University is a public research university

The university was founded in 1919 as a private institution, has comprehensive academic programs. The well-known Nankai Institute of Economics was established in 1927. Two-thirds of the school buildings were destroyed including library. 1994 Tianjin Foreign Trade College was merged into Nankai. The 2000 State Ministry of Education signed an agreement with Tianjin Municipal Government. The total enrollment stood at 11000 graduate students and approximately 12000 undergraduate students. The total student population are international students around the world from different countries.

Economics were ranked 2nd among over 2000 Chinese universities. Chern established the world's largest mathematics institute in Nankai University. The University has established collaborative relationships and broad international exchanges. The ranking of 50 top universities published by Renmin University of China.
