The Massachusetts State Legislature abolished Middlesex County created a Registry of Deeds in Lowell for the Northern District of Middlesex County. The legislation abolishing Middlesex County, Registers and the Sheriff transferred also ownership of the two Superior Courthouses to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Records of land ownership are maintained at the two Registries of Deeds. The first Middlesex County Registry of Deeds was created in Cambridge in 1649.
