The Democrats had worked in 1876 on the presidential campaigns of Ohioans Rutherford B. Hayes. Hanna was assisted by Charles Dawes in 1896, dispatched nearly 1500 speakers in the electorally crucial Midwest across the country. The &8221; Election Results went to the polls, was the largest margin of victory since &8217; s reelection since President Ulysses S. Grant. The Republican nominee captured New England, the Border States and the battleground Midwest. The Republican ticket attracted a majority vote in farm regions in a considerable portion and most major cities.
The United States became officially monometallist with passage of the Gold Standard Act. The election spelled effectively the demise of the Populist Party as the nation.
