Hildburghausen is a town in central Germany in Thuringia. Geography is situated in the valley of the Werra river. The settlement of Hilteburgehusin was mentioned first in a 1234 deed. The Henneberg lords vested the citizens in 1324 with town privileges. The 1353 estates of Hildburghausen were inherited upon the 1485 Treaty of Leipzig by the Wettin landgrave Frederick III of Thuringia.
